Delores Lekowski is a burn survivor and she is best known for her creation of "The Hurting Angels", a book with a special message for children who have suffered burns, illness, or other traumas that may hurt their self-esteem. She published this book with the complete support of the National Association of State Fire Marshals in July, 2000. They contacted a talented illustrator, Howard Sparber, to bring her words to life with his magical illustrations and helped distribute "The Hurting Angels". Elizabeth A. McClure has written a heartwarming and inspiring poem, Hurting Angel, that appears in the book.

This inspiring book continues to be distributed among children at various burn units and organizations - free of charge. Delores has spoken with newspaper and television reporters, contacted Congress and product manufacturers regarding fire safety. She has carried the cause of the NASFM to Shriners and other organizations that have offered their help. She is active in the Phoenix Society (an organization for burn survivors and their families) and works with other burn and trauma survivors with her tireless inspiration.
